Dr. John Whitehead, DO offers gender affirming male-to-female surgery in Florida. Dr. Whitehead was trained in the art of gender reassignment surgery by Dr. Harold Reed, the now-retired urologist who practiced at The Reed Center for decades.
Along with his husband Dr. Alain Ramirez, a Yale-trained anesthesiologist, Dr. Whitehead founded Restore Medical Center to give back to the community. Being gay, they understand the importance of providing a safe space and compassionate and respectful care.
Training and Experience
- Completed medical school and a five-year general surgery residency at Chicago College of Osteopathic medicine.
Completed a fellowship in critical care at Northwestern University.

- Spent many years working as a trauma surgeon at one of the busiest centers in the country for penetrating trauma.

Dr. Whitehead's private outpatient surgical facility is closed down to other patients on your day of surgery, so that you have total privacy. The facility is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities, which assures patient safety and hospital standards.

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Whitehead follows WPATH guidelines for surgery. You will need to provide:
- Two referrals from qualified mental health professionals. Dr. Whitehead coordinates with a wider team and can recommend mental health professionals who can provide an evaluation and letter for a $300 fee.
- A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones (unless hormones are not clinically indicated.)
Pre-operative hair removal is not required as Dr. Whitehead performs follicle cautery or "scraping" during surgery.
Financing & Insurance
