Dr. Praful Ramineni, MD is a highly experienced, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specializes in gender-affirming surgery. Dr. Ramineni has more than 15 years of experience and performs at least 600 procedures a year. He's known for not just his exceptional surgical skills and natural-looking results, but also for his caring bedside manner and great communication style.

Dr. Ramineni was one of the busiest surgeons at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he performed complex reconstructive surgery for cancer and trauma patients in addition to microsurgery and aesthetic surgery. While serving as the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at MedStar, Dr. Ramineni taught over 100 residents, earning him numerous teaching awards.

After more than 10 years in academic medicine, Dr. Ramineni opened a private practice in Washington, D.C. At District Plastic Surgery, 75-95% of his patients are transgender and non-binary. Gender-Affirming Genital Surgery

• Orchiectomy: Removal of the testicles, permanently eliminating testosterone production. This procedure can be done in conjunction with Vaginoplasty or as a standalone procedure for those who aren't interested in Vaginoplasty.
• Vaginoplasty: The creation of a functional vagina and aesthetic vulva. Dr. Ramineni has a special interest in Vaginoplasty and has modified his procedure to use not just penile and scrotal tissue but also peritoneal tissue, for increased vaginal depth. For Vaginoplasty revisions to increase depth, Dr. Ramineni uses an allograft lining instead of a graft.
• Vulvoplasty: A minimal depth technique which involves removal of the penis and scrotum and creation of the clitoris and labia. Because no vaginal canal is made, dilation isn't required. Vulvoplasty is a good option for those who aren't interested in receiving penetrative vaginal sex, have concerns about age or recovery, have higher risk factors, or simply feel that Vulvoplasty is more affirming of their gender.

Gender-Affirming Face and Neck Surgery

Facial Feminization: A group of procedures that feminize facial features. Dr. Ramineni is experienced with a broad range of techniques used to surgically manipulate both bone and soft tissues. Surgery can be performed as single procedures or as multiple concurrent procedures. Choose from: Hairline Correction, Forehead Recontouring, Brow Lift, Rhinoplasty, Cheek Implants, Lip Lift, Chin Recontouring, Jaw Recontouring and Tracheal Shave.

Gender-Affirming Top Surgery

Breast Augmentation: Aesthetic surgery to augment the breasts using either saline or silicone breast implants. Gender-affirming Breast Augmentation is distinct from standard Breast Augmentation in ways that require a surgeon to have familiarity and experience performing it for transgender patients. These differences include: placement of implants, adjusting the inframammary fold, and repositioning and enhancement of the areola.

Also available: Body Feminization (liposuction and fat grafting to enhance curves) and Buttock Augmentation (fat grafting and/or implants.)

Consultations with Dr. Ramineni
Dr. Ramineni offers in-person, phone and virtual consultations at no cost. The consultation is your opportunity to ask questions and view before-and-after photos from his previous patients. The wait time for a consultation is two weeks. Surgery dates are booked out 2-4 months after a consultation. If you're coming from out of town, be sure to ask his staff about discounted hotel rates.

Costs, Insurance and Financing
If you're paying out-of-pocket, you'll receive a detailed price quote following your consultation. The price will also include fees for the operating room and anesthesia, plus any needed post surgical garments. If you need a financing option, Dr. Ramineni takes CareCredit which is a type of medical financing that works much like a credit card.

Dr. Ramineni accepts insurance from the following companies: Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Cross Federal, Cigna and United Health Care. Dr. Ramineni doesn't accept Medicaid or Medicare.

Surgery Requirements

• No BMI requirement.
• If using insurance, you'll need to get letters from a mental health expert to your insurance company. Typically, the requirement is one letter for Breast Augmentation and two letters for genital procedures. If paying out-of-pocket, Dr. Ramineni only requires a letter for genital procedures.
