Gender-Affirming Breast Augmentation
While Breast Augmentation is performed by many plastic surgeons, experience performing gender-affirming Breast Augmentation is much less common. It is important to work with a surgeon with this experience as there are subtle but important differences between cis and trans Breast Augmentation. For example, many transgender patients require larger size breast implants than cis women. Also, trans feminine patients often require adjustment of the inframammary fold so that the implants are properly aligned with the nipples.
Dr. Jandali performs Breast Augmentation in a single or staged procedure, depending on patient anatomy. With either approach, only a small incision is made so that scarring is minimal.
In a staged procedure, tissue expanders are put in first. The tissue expanders are slowly filled over the space of a few months to stretch the skin so that the desired size of implants can be used. In the follow-up surgery, the expanders are removed and the breast implants are put in.
Breast implants are placed in one of two locations:
- Subglandular: The implants are placed in front of the pectoralis muscle and behind the breast tissue.
- Subpectoral: The implants are placed partially behind the pectoralis muscle. The muscle provides an extra layer of covering over the implant which can give it a more natural appearance.
There are two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Most patients choose silicone gel implants, because they feel and look more natural, with less chance of rippling compared to saline implants.
Breast implants also come in various sizes,
widths, and projections. Implant size is
chosen with the patient before surgery. Dr.
Jandali has a sizing kit in the office which
gives an idea of which size is the best for a
patient’s frame.
Breast implants last about 10-15 years before
needing to be replaced.
Surgery Requirements
- A letter from a mental health provider recommending Breast Augmentation surgery.
- Cessation of smoking and recreational drug use before surgery.
